In celebration of the upcoming Chinese National Day to occur on October 1st, the Federation of Chinese Canadians in York Region (FCCYR) and the Town of Richmond Hill together with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto held an official flag raising ceremony on the morning of Saturday September 26th, 2015 to mark the 66th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. In addition, beginning September 26th to October 2nd, Richmond Hill has declared the week to be Chinese National Day Proclamation week in honour of all the Chinese citizens that have set their roots in Richmond Hill and have made contributions to the town’s development and prosperity.
Guests of honour include the FCCYR Chairman, Dr. Ken Ng, Mayor of Richmond Hill Mr. Dave Barrow, the Consul General of the PRC in Toronto, Mr. Bing Xue (薛冰) and members of the Consulate office, Hon. MPP Reza Moridi, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Minister of Research and Innovation. Other honourable guests included members of the Richmond Hill council including Councillor Mr. Godwin Chan, Councillor Mr. Castro Liu, Councillor Ms. Karen Cilevitz, Councillor Mr. Tom Muench and members of the York Regional Police, Maria Ahrens, Staff Sergeant Alice Tsang, and PC S.A Jiang
The event welcomed over a hundred guests and were dazzled by performances from Sammy Cheng’s Chinese Lion Dance Team and the Sunset Glow Cultural Association that performed a brilliant traditional waist drum performances. The guests sang the Canadian National Anthem and the Chinese National Anthem loud and proud as the Chinese flag was raised signifying the Chinese community that have entrenched their histories and contributions in the Town of Richmond Hill.
