In celebration of the upcoming Chinese National Day to occur on October 1st, the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham (FCCM) and the City of Markham together with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto held an official flag raising ceremony on the afternoon of Saturday September 26th, 2015 to mark the 66th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. In addition, Markham declared September 26th to be Chinese National Proclamation Day in honour of all the Chinese citizens that have set their roots in the city of Markham and have made contributions to the city’s development and prosperity.
Guests of honour include the FCCM Chairman, Dr. Ken Ng, Mayor of Markham Mr. Frank Scarpitti, the Consul General of the PRC in Toronto, Mr. Bing Xue (薛冰) and members of the Consulate office, Mr. Akhilesh Mishra, Consul General of India in Toronto and Hon. MP Peter Kent and MP John McCallum’s spouse. Other notable guests included members of the Markham Council including Regional Councillors Nirmala Armstrong and Joe Li, Ward Councillors Amanda Collucci and Alan Ho, members from theYork Regional Police Inspector Bullen of 5 District Staff Sergeant Alice Tsang, and PC S.A Jiang.
The event welcomed over a hundred guests and were dazzled with a musical performance of cultural exchange. Students from the FCCM Markham Chinese Cultural Centre performed the Canadian National Anthem with classical Chinese musical instruments, Guzheng and Er-hu and the Kindred Spirits Orchestra performed the Chinese National Anthem with western musical instruments. The guests sang the Canadian National Anthem and the Chinese National Anthem loud and proud as the Chinese flag was raised signifying the Chinese community that have entrenched their histories and contributions in the City of Markham.
